When performance becomes part of architecture

The more I work with Passive House, the less I think about energy.


This week, I visited a Passive House under construction with a client whose own project will soon be submitted for planning approval.


The building is at a particularly revealing stage. Many of the strategies that will later disappear behind finishes are still visible: the continuity of the insulation, the treatment of thermal bridges, the installation of the windows, the airtightness layer, and the careful connection between different construction elements.


What struck me during the visit was how natural all of this seemed to someone who may soon live in a house designed according to the same principles.


Perhaps this says something important about what experience with Passive House has brought to my work.


When we first begin working with the standard, much of our attention is naturally focused on numbers: heating and cooling demand, U-values, thermal bridges, airtightness, ventilation efficiency, PHPP calculations.


Everything is calculated, tested and verified.


With experience, however, the relationship with those technical requirements changes.


They do not become less important. Quite the opposite.


They become so deeply integrated into the design process that they are no longer treated as separate technical problems.

The continuity of the thermal envelope, airtightness, window performance, solar control, ventilation and thermal bridges become part of the architecture itself.


It is perhaps similar to a pianist who, after mastering technique, no longer thinks about every movement of the fingers and simply plays the music. Or a skier moving at speed, no longer consciously thinking about the position of every part of the body, but concentrating on the line ahead.


A sports psychologist once described this to me, somewhat humorously, as the “NIKE technique”: Just do it.

The technique has not disappeared.


It has been assimilated.


This is increasingly how I see Passive House in my work as an architect.


I remain concerned with every thermal bridge, every junction in the envelope, airtightness, window performance, ventilation, solar gains and the numbers produced by PHPP.


But I no longer see these as separate from architecture.


The objective is architecture.


Architecture in which comfort, technology, energy performance, durability and environmental quality are considered together from the very beginning.


For me, this is also where the idea of quality becomes particularly important.


A high-quality house should not require its occupants to constantly think about how it performs. Comfort should feel natural. Indoor temperatures should remain stable. Fresh air should be provided quietly. Technology should work discreetly in the background. Energy consumption should be low because the building itself has been designed to need very little.

This is not about adding performance to architecture.


It is about designing architecture that performs.


And when that integration is achieved successfully, energy efficiency is no longer the main subject.



It becomes a natural consequence of quality.
